Welcome to my 10^th grade portfolio. My name is Shaurice H and I’m 15 years old. My favorite color is purple and I love to sing and dance. My favorite sports are Basketball,Volleyball and Softball.I have one brother and one sister that live at San Paqual Academy with me. Jabriel is my older brother and he is a senior about to graduate. Sharay is my younger sister that is in the 7^th grade. As you read my portfolio you will learn that I’m a very out going person and I’m up for any challenge. Improvement

Over the past two years, I have been exposed to lots of new things and new people. For example, my writing skills weren’t as good as they could have been because I transferred to different schools. Now I can write an essay with out getting nervous because it has to be 5 paragraphs. I improved by accepting the fact that if I didn’t try I would be leading myself to failure and that was something I did not allow.

My reading skills were good but now that I look back they are great! I can read any big words with out having to sound it out because I know the concept of reading in my head. I have read chapter books and novels to improve my reading skills over the last past two years.

My speaking skills were not good at all. The only way I knew how to talk was slang and gang violence. I’ve decided to make myself a better person and talk like I have sense. If I say something like “mines” I correct myself because I know that is not a word. With the speaking skills I have now I am able to speak to adults and be looked at as if I have respect. I improved my speaking skills by taking English class very serious. I also improved because it was my choice.

My group-work skills are no as good as they should be but I am working on them and trying to fix them. I understand that in college your professor may have you work on group projects so that is why I choose to participate in group-projects. My group- working skills are getting better.

I was afraid to work a computer because I had no idea what I was doing. Now that I have Ms. Priester’s class I know everything I could ever know about them. I also too Kyle Conwell’s class as an elective my freshman year. As I get older I know more and more stuff about technology.

 To improve my academic skills I will continue to be open to learn new things. I will continue to turn in my work and pay attention in class and finish my homework. This is my improvement paragraph.

Portfolio - Future

I feel that my future is in my hands and I don’t want to mess it up. My goals are to be successful in life and stay on the right track no matter what I decide to do with my career. I plan to go to college but the biggest goal for me is to attend San Diego State University which is my favorite college of them all. I want to make this goal come true because if I do I won’t have trouble with transportation because my family lives near that school. Being in high school has opened my eyes to see what is ahead for me. It’s time for me to step up and look into serious and important things that will only help me. In order to complete these goals I must continue to keep up my grades and have no D’s or F’s. My family and friends will help me achieve my goals by staying in my life and keeping me motivated. I genuinely believe that my goals will come true and if not that then I will live a decent life.  

Playwrights Project Play Performance

Today four actors from the Playwrights Project came to campus to perform excerpts from our plays. The word that describes how I felt during the plays is relieved. My play didn’t get read and even though it was good I didn’t want the actors to act mine out. Also, lots of people had very good plays which relieved me that we ran out of time and they didn’t get to read mine. This experience has impacted me because of all the great plays I seen get acted out. Lerontae, Nora, and Bella had very awesome plays. When the actors were acting them out I thought to myself “This play has really caught my attention”. Then I got to see the Playwrights writer of the play and I was very impressed.

Greatest High School Accomplishments

My greatest high school accomplishment was getting involved in sports and having a 3.8 for volleyball season. I never thought I’d play sports because I was never forced to. Now that I’m in high school I see all the opportunities I get when I’m playing sports. I can get a basketball scholarship to San Diego State University if I tried hard enough. Although I don’t think they recruit kids out of high school any more. Also for volley ball I had to receive a 3.5 to play and I received a 3.8. I didn’t think I would even get a 3.0 better yet a 3.8.  I was so proud of myself. After that I lost hope in myself because I let people get into my head and I gave up. If I tried and was super dedicated I could do it. Now that I am about to be a junior I realize that grades are very important in sports and for a scholarship you need at least a 3.8. I love sports and I’d do anything for them. I don’t just play one sport I play Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball. I love them all!

My Educational Experiences

“How has your educational experience influenced your current academic performance?” Well I must say that everything I have learned at my other schools has paid off for me now. I'm very smart and intelligent and now when I see school work it's nothing I haven't learned or seen already. Due to my educational experiences, I am currently in the 10^th grade and I have very good grades. I set very high standards set for myself. I currently make sure that my homework/class work is finished at the time it is required. I come to school everyday ready to learn even when I’m having a bad day.

Greatest High School Obstacle

I have had many obstacles my last two years of high school but one to me stands out the most. The one that stands out to me is when I had to earn a 3.5 GPA to stay on the volleyball team. I knew I could do it but it took a lot of hard work. I had little room for error but with consistent focus and doing my homework everynight I was able to pull it off thankfully. I know I can do a lot better than what I am right now, I just need to put in the effort. This to me has been the greates high school obstacle, but I'm certain more will be on the way.

Free Blog Post

Well today and Priesters class Lexi and Amy almost fought but Becky and I being the good friends we are held her back. Other people that I have altercations with are making it into a bigger deal then what it is. I dislike half the girls on this campus because they love the starting stuff but sooner or later they will need to grow up because when they leave here it won't be the same. It seems like they have nothing better to do. I feel that if girls were to fight more often than there would be more respect for each other here. I'm not trying to say that fighting is a good thing but that's how a lot of people take out there anger and living here we aren't able to do that. Moving on, on Saturday my sister and I are going to get out pictures taken and give it to someone as a gift. We also got it court approved to take hosre back riding lessons. My first lesson is June 4 I think. Well this is my free blog post.

Playwrights Project Play Completion Reflection

Right now I feel disappointed in myself because I did not enter my project into the contest because I was still editing it. I feel that my play was very good, I took my time and it’s a true story. I don’t want the actors to act out my play because I’m kind of embarrassed. I’m afraid of what people might say about my play. I don’t want people to judge me if they don’t like my play. If there were time for me to enter the play I don’t think my play would win because there is no type of comedy it’s just a very direct play.

SPA Prom 2011 or Free Write

This year’s prom was not as fun as the year before. I feel this way because there was a lot of drama and almost a couple of fights. I was being pushed around but I kept my mouth shut. Lot's of girls were pretty and Latoya's dress was the best. Belinda won best hair. Tedra and Shanice won prom queen and king. Jennifer M and Marcos G won prince and princess. Next year I’m going to run for princess. Each year I wear different colors. This year I went with Jabriel and we wore Fuchsia, Gold and Black. Next year I’m going to wear blue.

I do not think it's wrong that SPA students just post the words of Caucasian men in our halls. I say this because not many people know more famous people who have quotes that are different quotes. In my opinion I feel that more Caucasian people are more known for things more than any othe4r race in the world. That just goes to show what students are learning in history classes in today’s society. Students should know more than just Caucasian quotes because some people may think of that as racism. I myself don’t find it racism because I don’t know too many other race’s with famous off the top of my head but I’m willing to learn them.

Welcome students! Today, I am going to teach you about what evidence is. Evidence is that which tends to prove or disprove something. You summarize evidence when you use quotes, and put things into your own words. To summarize you break long sentences into smaller one by using your own words. You quote evidence when you are going to use the exact same words from the internet or person. To use a quote you must put quotations around the sentence in the exact same form. You paraphrase evidence when it is a short simple section of text that you can easily put into your own words. To paraphrase you retell the ideas using your own words. This year for prom I’m going to wear green and white. Prom will be here in no time and I have not found my dress or shoes. I tell myself I’m going to go shopping over the weekend but I procrastinate. Also, the person that usually gives me the money for my prom stuff is in Georgia. I constantly have to call my mom and dad to see if they can help me out but then at the same time I hate taking money from them because I know that they are not wealthy. I wish that I could get a job but I can’t because I’m so young. I can’t do stuff with my friends because they always get to do it before me because of my age. I’m kind of indecisive about going to prom but in the end I always pull through with it. I’m really picky, which is another reason it’s hard to find a prom dress.

Now, I think that we America should be careful because we never know whats goning to happen to us after we have killed somone so important to Pakistan. Now that I have read/watched the news, I predict that someone will try and get revenge for Osama.One thing I predict is that someone is going to take Osama's place.I think this will happen because Osama was a "true" leaderto Pakistan. Another thing I predict is that a war will be started. I think this will happen because they have killed Osama.I hope that America is safe and we don't have a war because innocent people will die.

CST Testing Reflection

For the last 3 days our school has been taking the cst test’s. Monday was English, Tuesday was Math, and Wednesday was History. I’m not sure but I think that I’m taking Science on Thursday. I can’t stay focus if I’m sitting down for to long so during the tests I was very antsy. I don’t like that because I feel that the teachers will show me extra attention which isn’t what I want. If I didn’t know an answer to the question I would take an educated guess. Hopefully this doesn’t place us in our classes for next year because if so I will be placed in very low classes.

Testing Tips, Strategies, and Plays Reflection

Having testing tips before a test is always an advantage. Testing plays or tips help you stay calm before the test, have confidence and help you solve out problems you are stuck on. Having testing tips doesn’t mean your stupid or you need extra help. It’s something will not just help you as a student in high school, but getting in the habit of memorizing will help you as a college student. Testing tips will help you even if you’re an adult because everyone needs help at some point in time. Tests aren’t mean to be easy but they are if you study your hardest. Knowing as many solutions as possible is only for the best for you.

I don't get life

Sometimes I question why life has to be so hard. Like if it was easy no one would ever have to stress, tears will never have to be shed and anger wouldn’t be an issue. People say god did this for a reason but in my opinion why would you want to make us go through this? You say it’s so we learn and live out our problems. Well my problems are learning me like no one has before and tearing my world apart. I understand why kids commit suicide. Life is hard and they feel like they are alone. It’s pretty sad that some one so powerful such as god is making us go through this! Deep inside I cry out for help. I don’t know what else to do. Therapy, medication,”friends” but nothing seems to help. Maybe if I wasn’t so nice and caring people wouldn’t do me wrong. Who knows but it’s my turn to find out!

My Feelings about the Upcoming CSTs

Taking the California Standardized Tests makes me antsy and nervous. For example, I get nervous that I will not past the test and everyone will make a joke saying I’m not smart. I also get antsy while taking test because I feel when everyone is finished before me that I have to rush through it. I worry about not passing the test more than focusing on getting the answers right. I believe that these upcoming tests are just to place our school in the ranks of smart and smarter. If our school doesn’t get a high place I don’t care because I know we have plenty of bright students and kids who have major talent. I feel that test is pointless if you constantly have to feel like you’re not smart enough to pass it. I’m scared and I will procrastinate during my test like I do any other test.

Free Write Blog Post

This weekend was the SPAfest. Friday I practiced from 1:30- 4:30 and found out that everybody in the talent show had to help set up after practice. Only five people helped set up including me. After placing tables and chairs all over campus I still had to come home and make a dessert. Marcus, Becky and I made rice crispy treats and then made two whole bowls for ourselves. Saturday morning I woke up at 8:30 to go get my nails done and find the finishing touches for my dance crews outfits. I came back and got ready with Tierra and Becky. Then our families started to arrive and we all introduced each other. We went to the talent show and my dance group went last. If it was a competition our group would have won it all. We got so many compliments as a group and individually. After the talent show I introduced my boyfriend Marcus  to my dad. They had talked over the phone before and my dad was really happy I found someone like him. Marcus, my family and I all played relay races with eggs, whip cream, pillow cases water balloons, and lot’s more. After family day was over I took a shower hung out with Marcus. There was a dance but Marcus and I did not go because we were super exhausted. After Marcus went home I went right to bed and slept like a baby.

Playwrights Project Inspired by Music Paragraph

In class today we created three different starts to a play. At first, I couldn’t think of anything to write about. While listening to music I closed my eyes and wrote down the first thing that came to mind. While I was writing I had plenty of ideas that I couldn’t choose all of them. I wanted to be creative and choose three different ones. One was about love, horror, and a mystery death. Afterward I felt like I could keep writing and never get tired of it. I wanted to write the ending to all three of my plays but we didn’t have time. Hopefully when we start to write our play mine is the winner of the playwrights contest and I can feel proud of something I’ve done in my life.

Today my classmates and I found above grade level websites for our research paper. To search for websites I made sure that I broke down my focus questions as many ways as possible to find lots of different websites. When I found a website related to my focus question, I made sure it was a website that was created by a professor or college student. I made sure there were no advertisements, less opinions and more facts. I knew some of the websites I found were unacceptable because it didn’t have a date or an author and anyone could have updated that website and I wouldn’t have accurate information, I know the websites I selected are good because I made sure it was at least at grade level websites to complete my class work. Tomorrow, I expect that Ms.Priester will tell me to start thinking of how I will write my research paper.

Third Quarter Awards Review

Today we had an Award assembly for students who got good grades for the quarter. If you got a 3.0 GPA you won and award and $25.If you got a 3.5-3.9 GPA you won an award and $75. Last but not least, if you had a 4.0 GPA you won $100. Only three kids won $100 for there good grades which was Amy, Jojo and Sam. For the third quarter progress reports I had a 3.0 GPA but when it came to report cards I let two of my grades slip. Next quarter I’m trying to get at least a 3.5 for progress reports and report cards. I felt surprised when I saw a couple of kids who I never would have thought had good grades receive awards which made me want to work hard in school. I hope to end the fourth quarter on a good note with my grades so I don’t have to take a lot of summer school classes.

My focus question is “What are the advantages and disadvantages of being in the foster care system? “. I already know that not having your birth parents is a big disadvantage for foster youth. I also know that foster youth are known for “Juvenile Delinquents”. Additionally, most of the kids are traumatized by their past and end up with ADHD. By doing research, I hope to learn if foster youth isn’t such a bad thing after all. I understand the negative parts about being a foster kid but there has to be some positive to get you where you are today.

"Switch" Play Audience Member Experience

Today the sophomores and juniors went on a field trip to see a play called “Switch”. In my eyes I felt that the play was about not just having a group home or a foster home to go to but, a loving home. As a foster kid you tend to go to many different schools and can’t find a safe, loving, and caring home. Today I learned that lots of people don’t know what it’s like to be a foster kid but they feel the pain we go through just imagining what it would be like to lose their kids.

She said she would use a website from a scientific journal to find information for a research paper. I interviewed Victoria Skordilis. She said she would read who created the website and the date of the information posted on the website for information on a research paper.  I interviewed Abby Morton. She said she would make sure it was a website that wasn’t editable by the public and only the person who updated it. For example, wikipedia is something she would use.  This advice will help me write my research paper because I know how and where to find the type of information I need.

It’s been four whole years since I’ve seen you. Time blew by right down the road. Your scent still lingers around me as if you are where we first started to become happy. You and daddy may be gone, but I know somewhere you guys have sent your love from above. Who knew what would happen in that car. I buy flowers every year on the day of you guys death and nothing can ever stop me. Just wait for me; I’ll be there any day now. I write letters put them in balloons to see if can hear me calling upon you. It seems like everyday the weather is down with you here. I pray to god that the day I see you again will be the right way. I feel your presence upon me as I sleep at night. Daddy, I still wear your sweater before bedtime and mom I still feel weak without you here. I look myself in the mirror and tell myself “You are so beautiful”. I hope you know I love you guys.

Fourth Quarter Kickoff

When the day started off we watched a movie that I had no idea what it was about. I fell asleep like twice but woke up because everyone was laughing really loud so I just strayed awake. We then went to lunch afterwards and we had pizza. I didn't eat because both first and second lunches were mixed together which made the line even longer. I ate fat ball reduced Oreos which were very gross but I ate it because I was hungry. After lunch, my team and I were suppose to play softball but the softball field was flooded so we played "Wiffel ball". I didn't play because I just took up space so that I could get credit for the day. After "Wiffel Ball" My team and I played " Capture the flag". I decided to play this game also but I stopped because I got hit in the face. The last game I barely played but I still got credit. I went home then to practice.

Fourth Quarter Goals

My greatest accomplishment for 3^rd quarter was achieving a 3.0 GPA. To achieve that I was always staying focused homework and class work. I made sure that everything was turned in and completely finished and if there was an error with my work I talked to the teacher. My goal this quarter is to get higher than a 3.0 to get scholarships and make my college road easier to drive down. I hope that I achieve this goal because in the future it will really help me.

" Where have you gone, Charming Billy?" Narrative

I have been in Vietnam for two days and I have not seen many battles but I have already seen death. When I saw it was not from a battle or a fight but a it was from fright. I remember seeing Billy Boy Watkins scream as he clumsily stepped in the middle of the path and onto a landmine, blowing his foot off. He was so scared that he was going to die that he had a heart attack. That heart attack killed him. I was so scared when I watched him die right in front of  me from fear. Now that I think back on it is kind of funny, I can just imagine what his family will think when they get the paper explaining how their son had died. Not from a brave battle or being a hero, but of fright.

What I learned in the Third Quarter of English 10

This quarter I have learned about Primary and Secondary sources, Symbolism, Allegory, Poetry, Imagery, and Figurative language. I feel that the grade I received this Quarter is a grade I deserve because I worked hard while working on the assignments and completed most of them. Every Quarter is a new experience for me because I get to learn new things each time. There is one more Quarter left in the school year and I’m kind of upset that I will no longer have Ms.Priester as an English teacher. Also, leaving Ms.Priester’s class will lead me to a new adventure to learn new things going into Ms.Ramirez’s classroom. This is my experience while having Ms.Priester’s class for third quarter.

Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?

I would never enlist in the military. I would love to fight for people’s lives but I feel like I wouldn’t risk my life for theirs. I myself am somewhat selfish. I’m not selfish to hurt people’s feelings but I love my life to much too just risk it. On the other hand I would if I wasn’t scared of dying. If I were drafted I think I would cry and beg them not send me there. I would ask them if they could pick someone else who wanted to be drafted. If they told me know I think I would just kill myself but not as painfully as it would getting shot with a bazooka. There would be dead bodies everywhere and just one dead body could put me in a crisis.

CAHSEE reflection

I have very high confidence about passing the CAHSEE. I’m very smart in school and I feel that I put all of the information I was taught by my teacher Ms.Priester was a big help for me. I remember how she told us to relax and not to stress about the problems we didn’t know. I was one of the first ones done and not because I rushed through it but because every question I looked at seemed to be a piece of cake. I believe that the teaching method Ms.Priester uses to teach her students is very useful especially when you pay attention in her class. Freshman year Rebekah and I were the only two students with A’s in her class. I never thought I would be the one to receive an A in a class everyone seemed to dislike.

Primary and Secondary Sources

Secondary Sources get their information from Primary Sources which allows them both to get information they were both seeking for. Primary Sources find their information first hand. An example of Primary source would be a diary, letters, personal essays, speeches, editorials etc. Secondary sources are is second hand information. Examples of secondary sources would be history books, reference books, biographies, encyclopedias, magazine articles etc. Primary and secondary sources are useful because it is based on several different view points, it can give you a broad view, and it contains facts.

Feelings about the CAHSEE

I’m kind of ready for the CAHSEE. I’m very confident about the English part because I feel that it was of my strong subjects in school. When it comes to math I’m such a big fan of it. I get the concept of the basic math but during the CAHSEE it comes along with a time limit. I tend to get nervous and start to give up on myself. This is a very big thing for me because if I don’t pass it and I have to retake it I feel like kids will judge me. My goal is to pass it the first time around and if not that then before I graduate. If I complete this CAHSEE I will receive a High School diploma which will allow me to go to college. I pray to god that I pass it or a miracle happens.

Have you ever wanted to show off your accomplishments? Freshman have an advantage to get there accomplishments acknowledged while living at San Pasqual. On our campus blogging is another diary but on technology. You can post anything you want, at anytime, and plus it’s free. To be a sophomore means that you have matured and are getting more knowledge as you grow up. Life at S.P.A can sometimes be tiresome as if we’ve been to hell and back. The drama on this campus is as pointless as a snuggie. When I’m happy and not getting into trouble, I feel like the world has turned right side up. San Pasqual’s what you make it and not what anyone else thinks it should be like. I’ve been here for almost a year and a half and it feels like time has crept up on me and in my opinion this place can drive you crazy.

My free blog post will be about basketball. Yesterday was senior day for our seniors and the last day of basketball season. We lost but I was proud because we played hard. The boys were winning fourth quarter but went into overtime and lost by three points. There game was very intense and I thought that it was worth watching. I’m still trying to decide if I want to play softball because I just played two sports back to back and I’m exhausted. Softball can be a fun sport and I’m good at it but I want to take a break and focus on school and get a job.  I’m still indecisive but I’m young and I have plenty of choices.

I can relate to the “Grape Sherbet” poem because I remember when my grandpa died how I couldn’t remember what the stuff he cooked taste anymore. The phrases that help me imagine this poem was when she was talking about standing above stones with names on them and she had no idea there were people under her feel. Imagery helps a person imagine the story right out into detail. It has smell, sight, touch, sound, and taste.

Memorable Valentine's Day

My most memorable valentine was in the 5^th grade. I was dating a guy named Marvin. I say this is my most memorable Valentine’s Day because he spent $150 worth of gifts for me. I cherished them for a very long time. We broke up and I told him I threw it all away just to see if he still cared, and he did. We never got back together because I had to move away. The last time I seen him was at my little cousin’s birthday party and I was shy and didn’t know how to approach him. Now that I look back I regret not saying anything to him because for me to be so young he was the best boyfriend ever. He was sweet, he never let his friends change him, and I came before him all the time. If I had a chance to go back in time and talk to him I would. Now I’m a young lost girl who doesn’t know what she wants.

The emotion that "I am Offering This Poem" by Jimmy Santiago Baca expresses is love and greatfulness. For example, the only thing they are offering is a poem, and in the poem says" It's all I have to give and all anyone needs to live". Which means that even though it is just a piece of paper it has a lot of meaning. For example this shows that they are being greatful. In addition, the poem talks about love in general. That's why the emoion of this poem was talking about love and in a way greatfulness.

"Remeber" Paragraph

These statements are logical but only to some people. For example, I believe that these could be logical in my opinion  because I see that world as a part of me and it is what I make it.  "I heard her singing Kiowa war dance songs at the corner of Fourth and Central once. Remember that you are all people and that all people are you. Remember that you are this universe and that this universe is you. Remember that all is in motion, is growing, is you. Remember that language comes from this. Remember the dance that language is, that life is. Remember." I feel that in everyday this is logical and true. I do agree with the statements being logical.

"Remeber" Paragraph

Entering the poets world, I think she wrote this story and published it because she wanted to let the readers know that we are one and we are the earth. For example, she could have wrote this because she felt that the world that we live in today is what we are. Another example, If i were a poet I would have published this because nature is beautiful can be apart of anything. A final example, If I were to make a poem and have it published I would have made plenty of nature because we make it beautiful , but we can also destroy  destroy it. This poem made me feel like I should take care of the earth more.

"Heart! We will forget him" Paragragh

I think that the narrator may have had problems with her Ex-boyfriend. After all the problems, she only held them in until a last minute when she thought it would take off stress but only felt things got worse for her. Personification is a firgure of speech in which and object is given human qualities. When the author uses personification, it helps her feel like she isn't alone and just maybe somebody is listening to her. One way I can relate to this poem is when Im upset I sort of tell myself that Im better than any problem.
